ABSTRACT
Buildings can be regarded as historic windows to the past and as monuments to events or people. Appreciating the value of historic buildings and methods of their preservation at the micro scale can provide insight into how designers can maintain the character and identity of cities. This chapter outlines the various strategies for retooling old buildings while keeping their original architectural character by analyzing the transformation of buildings from technological and functional points of view.
