ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the importance of effective planting and landscaping in promoting biologically diverse and sustainable cities. It investigates the ecological, economic and social importance of biodiversity and provides planners with practices of integrating planting and landscaping to counteract the urban heat island (UHI) effect and conserve water. Special emphasis is placed on xeriscaping techniques that promote water conservation through a thorough understanding of regional weather patterns and local climates. Additionally, the importance of green roofs is highlighted for their ability to improve human wellbeing and lower the dwelling's carbon footprint. Placemaking through planting is additionally observed in the consideration of community spaces, such as community gardens and parks. The chapter concludes with recommendations for planners, through the implementation of these various methods, to design in harmony with biodiversity rather than against it.
