ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines the impact good teaching can have on learner achievement and highlights how effective planning contributes to this. The chapter discusses different aspects of a lesson and the importance of sequencing content to ensure that learners are able to build upon what they know already. Once the sequence of teaching and learning has been established, we explore how teachers can use their knowledge and skills to help their students develop their individual schemas by scaffolding the learning process. Whilst acknowledging the importance of detailed planning we also discuss why your lesson plan needs to be flexible rather than perfect.
