ABSTRACT

According to the Oxford Living Dictionary, “collaboration” (n.d.) is identified as the action of working with someone to produce something, with “communication” (n.d.) being the successful conveying or sharing of ideas and feelings. This is the second theme that emerged. In this chapter, comparison of the theories in the literature is used to identify the relationship between what influences educational leaders decision-making practices and its impact on decision-making. It provides a deeper dive into decision-making such as decision-making and leadership style, and decision-making as a leadership practice as it relates to collaboration and communication. Eventually, understanding, implementing, and sustaining second-order change is explained; in particular, as it relates to a shift in decision-making from traditional organizations to a professional learning community (PLC). Because PLC was used as an example of second-order change, and because collaboration and communication are tenets in PLCs, this chapter covers decision-making within traditional organizations as compared to that within a PLC, explaining it at both school and district levels.
