ABSTRACT

This chapter was inspired by a session that took place with a client who experienced problematic sexual behavior. John, like so many others, suffered from a dysregulated autonomic nervous system (ANS), resulting in an explanation of how this aspect of his body developed its own built-in defense system. The ANS operates beneath the level of conscious awareness in the subcortical brain. Written in an easy-to-understand narrative, this chapter details how John, over the course of this session, walked away with hope. By understanding the role childhood trauma and the ANS played in his behavior.
