ABSTRACT

The ruination of Dagestan’s economy, first by Soviet communist theory, then zastoy stagnation and subsequently by incomplete perestroika reconstruction, has left the people in a difficult position, with little capital on which to effect reconstruction. Some examples of this decline are explored in this chapter. From this position, ‘ethno-entrepreneurship’ is one possible way of restoring some degree of prosperity while simultaneously preserving the best qualities of the country and its various peoples; the fabrication of quality textiles is one example, where from being a particularly local product, modern selling techniques via the internet can open up a wider and wealthier clientele.
