ABSTRACT

This chapter comes from ‘The Ghilghilchay defensive long wall new investigations’ by Asker A. Aliev, Murtazali S. Gadjiev, M. Gaye Gaither, Philip L. Kohl, Rabadan M. Magomedov, Andidris N. Aliev, TSETS, 2006. In the context of the book, it sketches the history of the area from the 4th to 8th centuries AD, illustrated by and inferred from the archaeological defensive remains found at the end of the Caspian coastal plain running south from Derbent. These include walls of surprising extent, which would have helped control trade movements as well as military access along the Dagestani land corridor next to the sea.
