ABSTRACT

The preface provides a brief introduction to how to use the following client profiles in active learning using role-plays. Role-play interviews are discussed as starting with role-induction and including information about confidentiality that is based on professional guidelines and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). An overview of how cognitive abilities vary with age, intelligence level, and experience are provided. Practical strategies for helping children and minor adolescents participate effectively in treatment are discussed, including using developmentally appropriate vocabulary, using directed and concretely focused questions, and focusing on one question and issue at a time. How children and minor adolescents may communicate during the interview situation are discussed, as well as strategies for building a positive relationship using developmentally appropriate language. There are some people ages 18 and older who may benefit from these strategies, such as people who face cognitive challenges, people who are less comfortable with formal interviews and or less knowledgeable of standard English.
