ABSTRACT

This text provides students with practice developing diagnoses using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed., rev. [DSM-V-TRTM]) of the American Psychiatric Association and the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) of the World Health Organization. The emphasis is placed on the DSM-V-TRTM, which was developed to help clinical professionals understand the behavior, needs, and dynamics of their clients. The international ICD codes were designed to help track and report on medical and mental disorders, including cause of death reports, across countries, geographic regions, and the world; many countries also use these codes for healthcare reimbursement. Each of the adult and clinical profile chapters (Chapters 4–23) contain complex client information followed by exercises for developing diagnoses for the clients. After formulating initial diagnoses, questions will challenge the professional/student to consider critical diagnostic issues and then reconsider their initial diagnostic choices based on this deeper review of the issues. To complete these diagnostic exercises, access to the DSM-V-TRTM is needed.
