ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to the impact of violence and trauma across the lifespan on client welfare. It reviews information concerning the prevalence of violence and trauma in childhood, its cascading negative impacts, and its clinical implications in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. How intergenerational transmission of violence can occur and how this process can be interrupted and redirected toward resilient functioning is discussed. The chapter concludes with strategies for screening for violence and trauma, screening instruments that are available, and clinical implications for choosing difference strategies for assessment.
