ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the ethnographic setting is moved to the urban scenes of Surabaya and Jakarta. The kind of youth activism revolving around Buddhist revitalisation that has been explored in the rural context of Temanggung occurs in a broader climate of Buddhist youth groups attempting to breathe new life into their respective religious milieus. Like in Temanggung, the initiatives undertaken in this frame are rarely confined to religious preoccupations alone but encompass other social spheres. The mobilisation of entrepreneurial discourses, business models and events culture come into stark relief in the activities of some of the urban organisations explored in the chapter. It opens with a long-lived and fairly institutionalised Buddhist youth organisation, PATRIA, and it follows then newer groups, such as Young Buddhist Association of Indonesia in Surabaya and Buddhist Reborn in Jakarta.
