ABSTRACT

This chapter brings attention to a concrete Buddhist community in highland Central Java. The area is home to a few scattered communities that adopted Buddhism in the mid-1990s as their official affiliation. The chapter contextualises the sociopolitical background of the district, in which religious dynamics unfold. It then analyses the contemporary formation of revivalist narratives that seek to breathe new life into the Buddhist villages' religious engagement and identitarian commitment. The chapter follows in detail the creation of a base of religious youth activism aimed at enhancing religious self-awareness among the young residents of the area and the rural Buddhist community at large.
