ABSTRACT

One of the most consistent scientific findings in creativity is the importance of being open – open to new experiences, intellectual challenges, and different contexts or cultures. We cover what it means to be open and how it can increase people’s creativity. We discuss group creativity – which is such an important part of life in the theatre – and how embracing diversity and difference can yield better results for everyone. Other personal traits that can help creative success include being conscientious, persistent, curious, and tolerant of uncertainty. Some things that may seem helpful, such as being a perfectionist, can actually be barriers. We highlight how readers can use their personal attributes to help every part of the creative process.
