ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Mencian vision of the royal way in relation to his concept of the timely mean. Mencius explained that “holding the mean is a discernment process that should be changed according to the time, and one should not confuse it with being “fixed on one thing” and insisting on it stubbornly. Apostle Paul entrusted the future of his Jewish brethren to the mystery of God. Paul did not hastily make decisions for the Church but weighed the problems with deliberate reflections and deep responsibility. He taught the believers how to discern through his examples and led the Church communities to be faithful to the Good News of the Kingdom of God by providing them with a clear vision. Through discernment, which helps a person become more aware of social changes, one can delve into his/her tradition much more deeply and be able to harmonize various conflicting factors of society.
