ABSTRACT

The Book of Changes was also attractive for scholars under severe political persecution who tried to find the meaning of destiny, represented by traditional terms such as “mandate” and “time” surpassing human efforts. In short, the Book of Changes offered Confucianism an opportunity at its critical moment to embrace the totality of early Chinese cultural traditions. First of all, the Book of Changes explains the dynastic change of history in comparison with the change of four seasons:Just as Heaven and Earth make use of Radical Change so that the four seasons come to pass, so did Tang and Wu bring about Radical Change in the mandate to rule in compliance with the will of Heaven and in accordance with the wish of humankind. Second, the concept of time in the Book of Changes indicates the wisdom of a sage who knows the time.
