ABSTRACT

The four generational groups (Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z) experienced historical events together for the first time and had access to certain media during their formative years. Media use and political and civic engagement vary between generational cohorts because each cohort experiences different social and political events using different media prominent during their formative life stages. Previous research on generations is discussed to reveal major findings regarding generational research and provide context. This chapter discusses the major media prevalent during each cohort’s life span, the key events they experienced together and how these factors influenced each generation.
