ABSTRACT

This chapter examines cognitive, political and civic engagement among Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials and Generation Z. Cognitive engagement or attending to, discussing, thinking about and feeling emotionally involved with news, currents events or politics tended to increase as age increased. Civic engagement tended to increase as age decreased. Gen Z and Millennials were the most civically engaged in volunteering to serve or benefit their communities. Most respondents did not participate in traditional forms of political engagement, such as contributing money to a political party or candidate or attending a political speech or rally. For digital forms of political engagement on social media, Millennials participated most frequently, followed by Gen Z then Gen X, with Baby Boomers much less likely to engage politically on social media.
