ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the key concepts, findings and arguments of the book, setting findings in context with previous research including Zukin et al. (2006). We review the major findings regarding the generational cohorts and media usage, considering what our findings portend for the future of democracy in the United States. We review the concept of media literacy and discuss how media literacy training may enable all generational cohorts to develop an understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and media sources essential to a healthy democracy. While the current media environment does not develop citizenship as conventionally conceived, it provides opportunities and urgency for all citizens to validate all forms of media.
