ABSTRACT

This is the first of four chapters devoted to the details of effective mathematics teaching. Chapter 8 addresses tasks, learning environment, and discourse, while Chapter 9 explores tools and technology. The other two chapters go into detail on teaching specific mathematics content, from number sense to algebra, geometry, statistics, and discrete mathematics. Chapter 8 examines the NCTM standards on teaching and learning, as well as the teaching principle from Principles to Actions (2014). The topic of selecting and implementing rich and appropriate tasks is discussed through the use of several classroom examples. Establishing a positive learning environment in a mathematics classroom is described, with attention paid to seating arrangements and ways to build a mathematical community with students. The last major section of the chapter describes the importance of classroom discourse to build mathematical understanding. This section includes skills on how to ask good questions, the role of reading and literacy, cooperative learning strategies that promote discourse, research-based best practices, and reflection as a way to build teaching effectiveness.
