ABSTRACT

Chapters 10 and 11 examine the details of teaching specific mathematical content. Chapter 10 primarily explores number sense and algebra, while Chapter 11 addresses the topics of geometry, statistics and probability, and discrete mathematics. The current chapter begins with a general discussion about the role of mathematical reasoning and sense making, which the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics identified as the primary intent of secondary mathematics education. An examination of the teaching of number sense follows, using classroom examples and a specific lesson plan. Twelve classroom-ready, field-tested ideas for teaching number sense are presented to give the reader specific lesson-planning activities on the topic. The last major section is on the teaching of algebra. An overall framework on the purpose for teaching school algebra and best practices is presented, followed again by a specific lesson plan and 12 classroom-ready teaching ideas for lesson planning in the format of an activities sampler. The design of the next chapter is similar but takes up other topics of study in the mathematics classroom.
