ABSTRACT

Chapters 10 and 11 examine the details of teaching specific mathematical content. Chapter 10 primarily explores number sense and algebra, while Chapter 11 addresses the topics of geometry, statistics and probability, and discrete mathematics. The current chapter begins with a description of geometry, using examples to describe the content area and its subtopics. A sample lesson plan is presented, followed by 12 classroom-ready teaching activities for use in middle and high school mathematics classrooms. The teaching of statistics and probability follows, using the same format of topics and practices, including a lesson plan and 12 more teaching ideas presented in an activities sampler. The final mathematics topic to be examined is discrete mathematics, which is defined and presented with a lesson plan and classroom teaching ideas. The chapter concludes with a discussion of other mathematics courses and content available to students, such as pre-calculus, senior-level electives (e.g., personal finance), and calculus courses. Chapter 11 concludes Unit 4.
