ABSTRACT

Chapter 12 examines the topic of managing a mathematics classroom, which includes practical suggestions of what it takes to try to meet the needs of all students in a classroom. The chapter begins with an exploration of the topics of access and equity and what it means to give all students equal access to high-quality mathematics instruction. After defining equity and describing a theoretical framework, this section includes a discussion of special needs students, gender differences, the use of co-teaching, and the promotion of mathematics for students of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, as well as for English language learners. In the next main section, six specific strategies for differentiating a classroom to meet student needs are described, with examples provided. The chapter concludes with a presentation of ten practical suggestions for how to most effectively manage a mathematics classroom. These “tips” can be implemented by a field-based teacher candidate, such as in a student teaching role.
