ABSTRACT

This chapter examines each of the six principles of mathematics education, as laid out by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in their document Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All (2014), including Teaching and Learning, Access and Equity, Curriculum, Tools and Technology, Assessment, and Professionalism. The eight Mathematics Teaching Practices are discussed as research-based best practices that promote teaching and learning. The chapter also presents a case for mathematics teachers engaging in ongoing professional development, as well as ways in which the six principles overlap and interact with one another. In general, this chapter sets forth a framework to describe the main components of mathematics education and lays the foundation for elaborating on each topic in later chapters of the book.
