ABSTRACT

This chapter lays the groundwork for planning lessons (the focus of Chapter 5) by examining national, state, and local mathematics standards, as well as how to write objectives and utilize resources for planning. First, an historical perspective of curriculum is presented, followed by a thorough discussion of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) that have driven much of the state-level standard writing since its release in 2010. An explanation of a three-year high school core curriculum follows, with a variety of models examined by which a school can make mathematics accessible to all students, including crossover, clustering, and differentiated models. Controversial topics in curriculum, such as integrating high school content and tracking, are examined. Writing and categorizing objectives based on standards is explained through examples, and the chapter concludes with a discussion on the selection and organization of resources for planning and teaching, including ideas on how to assemble a resource file for teaching.
