ABSTRACT

Memory is a complex phenomenon, and modern research highlights the many different types of memory and memory processes that we use. This chapter reviews how working memory and long-term memory work together to help us make sense of our world; how we use the past in service of the present and future. The chapter covers how we use our memories of the past in different ways to remember events (episodic memory), facts and concepts (semantic memory), procedures (procedural memory), and even things that we are not consciously aware of (implicit memory). The chapter also covers how our memories help us act in the future by remembering to do something when the time comes (prospective memory).
