ABSTRACT

Experts can be impressive and awe-inspiring when they are highly skilled or display their vast knowledge. They can not only remember more about their area of expertise but also process new information more quickly in their area and approach their area of expertise differently from novices. This chapter discusses how experts organize their knowledge (schemas) and how this differs from novices. It covers how expertise is developed, examining the well-known 10,000 hour rule, and the importance of deliberate practice, feedback, and self-motivation. And finally, the chapter discusses the benefits (problem solving) and drawbacks of expertise (mental set and curse of knowledge).
