ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses how the doctrine of Christian Dominionism, as promulgated by Rev. Grant, came into existence, its source. It deals with the surprisingly sophisticated, if rather ironic, logic that underlies CD thinking, particularly in regard to modern science. Conservative American Christians were already calling themselves “fundamentalists” when they formally declared “war on modernism” in 1919. This was barely a year and a half after the end of World War I and the frightening ferment that followed in the tracks of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. Authorities such as Julie Ingersoll claim that the phrase “Christian Dominionism” is attributable to its considered “foundational” theologian, Rousas John Rushdoony. While the phrase “Christian Dominionism” was not in wide use until Schaeffer, Rushdoony, and North popularized it, it has raised the fears and hackles of prominent liberal progressive thinkers. The stated goal of Christian Dominionism is to enhance the glory of God, regardless of the price that must be paid by democratic institutions.
