ABSTRACT
Lorraine portrays Big Walter as a man who worked himself to death in order to provide for his family and made his last act, an act of giving and of hope in the future. However, Travis, understanding that his parents are unable to afford the childhood trinkets and treasures he wants, argues for permission to work for them. Travis's willingness to work shows his growing maturity and independence. The dream of the home in Morgan Park, Lena explains, not only faded over time, but the suffering that accompanied the fading dream was symbolized in Big Walter's actions when he came home from work. Each and every character in Raisin clearly understands the importance of "opportunity" as well understanding the complexities, complications and work that goes into taking advantage of a "fair shot at it" and understand that not all opportunities should be pursued, for they may be a ruse.
