ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the swift change experienced by Korean cinema in conjunction with Hallyu. It explains the ways in which Korean cinema has become one of the major cultural products representing the Hallyu phenomenon and addresses the processes of whether Korean cinema has created a unique local culture. The chapter then explores the ways in which Korean cinema has overcome setbacks by developing new business strategies such as remakes. Finally, it maps out the recent involvement of Netflix in the domestic film market and the ways in which it connects to the Korean Wave. It eventually addresses whether Korean cinema has continued to grow in the global markets as well as its future direction in the New Korean Wave era.
