ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the content in Chapters 4–6 which focus on nonroutine problems involving typical academic mathematics content including algebra, geometry, precalculus and discrete mathematics. This chapter focuses on nonroutine problems for which the content focus is geometry. The 12 problems discussed in this chapter include five problems at the introductory level, five at the intermediate level and two problems at the advanced level. Each of these problems is described in detail including a sample of directions for students, processing suggestions, ideas for assessment, guidance for the teacher and ideas for extensions. Although a few of the problems are directly related to academic geometry content, the primary goal of the problems is to improve the student’s ability to solve nonroutine problems.
