ABSTRACT

In this first chapter, the concept of uncertainty in its theoretical frame and in its geographical consequences is analysed, in order to enter the main questions of the book. Starting from the definitions given by several authors in philosophy, sociology, international relations and history, uncertainty from a geographical perspective is considered and proposed, as never done before. In particular, the definition of uncertainty is made to coincide with the concepts of chaos, crisis and revolution, corresponding to the loss of a centrality, as occurred during the Early Modern Age as well as after the Cold War. A diachronic perspective is advanced in order to understand the conceptual framework of the book.
