ABSTRACT

Modern uncertainty is here compared to the affirmation of modern tragedy. In particular, a parallel is drawn between the condition of mapmakers and travellers with the main characters of modern tragedies, as symbols of the loss of points of reference, of the inability to make decisions and of immanence as uncertainty. With the passage from mappamundi to theatrum mundi, tragedy was also affirmed in the cartographic condition of Modernity. Tragedy rose again during Modernity because, as some contemporary authors have interpreted, it was a deep condition of the human being during Modern Times. Due to of the loss of past certainties and of a certain centrality, in favour of partial interpretations of the world as well as the inability to interpret the new world reality of that time, just as tragedy characterized Hamlet, Dr. Faustus, Othello, it also characterized Modern cartographers.
