ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the consequences of having been exposed to all four forms of neglect by the primary caregiver. It deals with the significance for the child when it is exposed to all the four forms of neglect, i.e., active and passive, as well as emotional and physical. Special emphasis is put on the importance of the child being in development, while it is exposed to these instances of neglect. In the family environment, the development children from normal developmental promoting family environment is compared with the development of neglected and traumatized children and adolescents. It is illustrated how the neglected and traumatized child, when it reaches adolescence, will have a wide range of difficulties in relation to regulation, as each developmental phase builds on top of the previous phase.
