ABSTRACT

After its adoption by the European Union, the utilisation of the term radicalisation will be widely spread to their member states. The rising phenomenon of homegrown terrorism also led the United States to pay attention to prevention policies on violent extremism. President Barack Obama was the first to initiate a discussion on the prevention of political violence at the state level. He is also responsible for bringing this discussion to the international area. The aim of this chapter consists of an analysis of the United States and the United Nations prevention policies concerning violent extremism. The first section is a political context following the attack on 9/11 in the United States. It will be followed by an analysis of the American prevention of violent extremism policy. The last section will be the United Nations' analysis of the violent extremism prevention plan.
