ABSTRACT

Leaving the idea of finding a single cause for violent extremism, some experts proposed a stage-based model to identify the steps of engagement toward violent extremism. Term radicalisation appears around 2005–2006 in the models. This conceptual shift will bring several discussions about the usefulness of a new term in this field. Twenty years of modelling also raises the question about the increase in knowledge. In this chapter, nine relevant models will be analysed. The first addresses the models developed before the use of the term radicalisation. The second brings together the models developed with the aim of supporting law enforcement and justice in the face of domestic terrorism, and the last one concerns more recent complex models. Using the analysis of De Coensel, it will be possible to show some similarities between the models in the last section. The conclusion will be an open discussion about improvements of knowledge in recent years.
