ABSTRACT

This chapter serves as an introduction to the African conceptualisation of virtue theory and good character following some philosophical perspectives. The chapter argues for a more comprehensive virtue theory in African cultures. It mainly concentrates on the selected works across Africa that focus on virtues and the idea of good character or a good person. While I am aware of further developments of the African concept of personhood, my focus is not only on the metaphysical dimension of being a person but equally on the content of virtues and how humans become good or well-thought-of in the traditional African setting.
