ABSTRACT

This presentation gives a background for the further development of this work. The chapter provides the perspectives of ubuntu as versions of eudaimonia virtue theory. First, it introduces the general eudaimonia theory, getting insights from Aristotle and other studies. It then summarises ubuntu into two interpretations of Eudaimonia theories. The first builds on communal relations and social harmony as the greatest good (Hharmonious communitarian account), while the second builds on humanity/human dignity, self-actualisation, and collective relations (Hhumanity’s self-realisation -– communitarian account).
