ABSTRACT

In a predominantly agricultural region the problem of the adjustment of population to economic resources can best be studied by explaining the variations in the density of population in terms of agricultural possibilities. A convenient method of approach to this problem is to observe the process and stages of agricultural development as determined by the extension of cultivation. This chapter discusses the course of agricultural development and the growth of population in relation to extension of cultivation in the Active Delta, which covers the inland districts of Dacca, Faridpur, and Tipperah and the littoral districts of Bakarganj and Noakhali. It is likely that the population of Noakhali and Bakarganj will go on increasing as a result of the extension of cultivation into the alluvial formations that are bound to come into existence in the near future.
