ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the theoretical framework, research design, and methodology, and provides a general assessment of the theoretical underpinning of the work, predicated upon sociological institutionalism. It presents some specific theoretical expectations regarding the role of logos of political parties, private military and security companies, and terrorist groups, drawn from the state of the art in each of these subfields. Colours are visual perceptions that arise from the stimulation of so-called photoreceptor cells in the human retina triggered by electromagnetic radiation. Scholars in different fields have developed different techniques to measure, reproduce, and categorize colours. Neuroscientists have long investigated the meanings associated with colours and their activation in the human brain, focusing on the distinction between colours’ embodied and referential meanings.
