ABSTRACT

The author fortunate to have been part of the mental health profession, teaching college classes in psychology; writing and facilitating behavioral health and addiction treatment workshops for continuing education; consulting for family treatment programs; working as a therapist in private practice, Juvenile Justice, Child Welfare, adult corrections, and inpatient and outpatient mental health facilities; and serving as a clinical manager at Intensive Family Services’ research sites. For several decades, researchers have been attempting to determine which clinical models and interventions can be designated as “evidence based.” Certainly, there is great value in research that looks at certain aspects of human behavior; but mental health research that looks at clinical models, client change process, and outcomes based on a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders diagnosis will have its limitations.
