ABSTRACT

This chapter helps the readers to understand concept of descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics describes the nature of the dataset. It helps readers to understand the characteristics of a large dataset more meaningfully. Descriptive statistics includes the two following categories of measurement of data: measures of central tendency or averages, and measures of dispersion or variability. The most commonly used measures of central tendency are mean, median, and mode. Mean is further classified into different categories based on the specific type of average required in different problems. The median is generally calculated to overcome the drawback of the mean. A mode is a measure of central tendency that helps identify the highest frequency value. It represents the most common and frequently occurring number in the dataset. The best thing about the mode is that it can be calculated for qualitative or categorical data.
