ABSTRACT

This chapter turns to the battle against apartheid rule in South Africa. While much has been written about the African National Congress (ANC) leadership, notably Nelson Mandela’s iconic status, much less is known about the party’s military wing and guerrilla movement that he also founded, uMkhonto we Sizwe (commonly referred to as MK). In this chapter, we question the history of MK military veterans as a distinct media scarce community. MK veterans have lived relatively media scarce lives in the shadow of the media abundant figure of Nelson Mandela and the ANC. Subsequently, the goal of this chapter is to discuss the various forms in which MK veterans communicated their covert struggles, and ultimately their contributions to the end of apartheid. Today, as many MK veterans enter retirement age, their past media scarce lives have posed new challenges.
