ABSTRACT

Process choice for manufacturing is discussed to explain how additive manufacturing is positioned differently than traditional manufacturing processes. A business perspective is presented that looks at six manufacturing capabilities: cost, quality, time, flexibility, innovation, and sustainability. These capabilities are discussed to show the advantages of additive manufacturing compared with traditional manufacturing. The issue of molds that are used in manufacturing is brought up because these are a significant part of traditional manufacturing but are virtually non-existent in additive manufacturing. The case for desktop 3D printers – that is, machines that are targeting consumers or households and sell for $5,000 or less – is discussed separately.
