ABSTRACT

3D printing has been applied for creating haute couture and specialized items such as costumes for the Black Panther movie, but it has also been used for more mundane products such as soles of shoes. AM is used for several reasons, including the ability to customize and have a fast delivery time. The main AM types used are material extrusion, VAT photopolymerization and powder bed fusion. AM is applied across the supply chain (e.g., by designers, in manufacturing, in retail and by prosumers). AM is to some degree accepted for apparel but is not widespread. It is in the early stages of adoption (by innovators and perhaps early adopters). Some of the main challenges for further adoption have to do with the materials and the cost.
