ABSTRACT

This chapter 1, Part 1 of this book, explains the dynamics at play in the shifting ideology toward leadership. It starts with an abbreviated history of leadership theories to set the context for how leadership understanding has evolved since the turn of the twentieth century. The analysis identifies five significant milestones that have marked the evolution of leadership theory – being, doing, thinking, feeling, and connecting. Thereafter, the macro context in which contemporary leadership is embedded is discussed with the implications of these trend lines on present-day leadership thinking.
