ABSTRACT

After the wedding rites at the bride’s home the rituals at the groom’s home take place. This series of rites relates to the incorporation of the bride into the groom’s family and kin group, and the acceptance and recognition of the groom as a new member of the bride’s family. The departure of the groom’s party is a sad occasion for the departing bride and her family, but after the pressure of several days of marriage ceremonies, it comes as something of a relief. The bride’s family accompanies her to the outskirts of the village and the women sing farewell songs and her parents ask that her shortcomings be overlooked. Gradually all the ceremonies are completed and the pavana (guests) return to their respective villages, The closest relatives and friends receive a Bidai (ceremonial farewell).
