ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the parallel between environmental and cultural heritage peacebuilding are examined. As with cultural heritage, environment in itself does not cause conflict. It is the power hierarchies, control structures and anthropogenic variables that create conflict around environment. Social science practitioners need to move beyond the often simplistic associations between climate and environment change and conflict, and integrate more fully the scientific understandings of this change. Environment can be utilised to support peace and reconciliation work through engagement with nature and place.
