ABSTRACT

While the United States has strong diplomatic interests in Antarctica, China has made significant investments in Antarctica and has become an active participant in Antarctic governance. China has rapidly expanded its presence on the continent in recent years in a process perceived by the United States as a threat to its security interests on the continent. Still, U.S.-China cooperation in Antarctica is a positive, albeit admittedly limited, opportunity. In this chapter, the respective policy and legislations, presence and influence in this region, and engagement with international and regional institutions, and relationship with the regional states will be unfolded prior to a discussion on the divergence and convergence of interests between China and the United States.
