ABSTRACT

Trump is an exemplary role model for lying, cheating, bullying, and narcissism in getting things done. As seen in this chapter, he also is textbook case of social cognitions and moral emotions that determine moral behavior, and more specifically the immature moral reasoning, lack of moral emotions, and the masterful use of mechanisms of moral disengagement that underlie immoral behavior. Trump's immature, self-centered moral reasoning is guided by the cognitive scripts of “always win,” “seek greater richness,” “avoid punishment,” and “get even.” Often lacking in moral emotions of empathy, guilt, and shame, his lying, cheating, and bullying are seldom deterred and their effectiveness in getting things done feeds his narcissism. As seen in this chapter, Trump's proclivity in the use of mechanisms of moral disengagement serves to absolve him of a sense of responsibility for any harm caused.
