ABSTRACT

It is unlikely that Trump's lying, cheating, bullying, and narcissism will ever change: They get things done. As concluded by the RAND study on the firehose of falsehood propaganda technique used by Putin in Russia, you can’t extinguish a firehose of falsehood with a squirt of truth. The same applies to cheating, bullying, and narcissism: It is not easy to extinguish them, especially when a president and millions of followers model and reinforce those behaviors. Children are watching. One hope for curtailing the epidemic of lying, cheating, bullying, and narcissism lies in parenting, with concerned parents recognizing and understanding how their parenting practices have a profound impact on their children's character development. This chapter presents recommendations to parents for developing their children's self-discipline and preventing and correcting misbehavior, which includes lying, cheating, bullying, and undesired narcissistic behaviors. The recommendations align with what research has found to be the most effective style of parenting: the authoritative style.
